Dearne FM’s Joe Sentance joined a group of local men for the very first Walking Football session with Barnsley FC. Have a look here at how he got on, we think he was best in goal.
The beautiful game for those who prefer a slower game!
As part of the Fit Reds programme of activities which target men aged 35+, the first ever walking football scheme in Barnsley, has been launched at Oakwell. The scheme supported by the British Heart Foundation, Barnsley Public Health and PSS (Personal Shaped Support), aims to build upon the currently successful ‘Fit Reds; healthy lifestyle programme.
Project Co ordinator, Lee Thompson who works for Barnsley FC’s Community Sports & Education Trust said ‘’ Walking Football is becoming increasingly popular across the nation and becoming increasingly available at a number of clubs and leisure centres, this is partly due to the fact that people are living longer and the need for appropriate activities for those aged 65+ is increasing. It seems a logical addition to the current healthy lifestyle programme we deliver’’.
The game is usually delivered in a small sided format using normal 5 –a- side rules with the added rule of ‘no running’. If you previously enjoyed playing football or just want to get fit, then these sessions will be ideal for you.
At Oakwells Indoor Centre. The sessions are structured and led by Level 4 qualified instructors who are well experienced in delivering activities for older men and women.
Walking Football is not uniquely for older people, those of all abilities are welcome from the age of 35+. There may be some men recovering from injuries or have a health condition who may find the sessions preferable to regular 5- a – side football.
