What is SportFX?
SportFX is a scheme which offers free weekly sport sessions to young people aged 10-19.
The project provides an opportunity for young people to take part in football, boxing and dance to move them away from participating in antisocial behaviour. It also helps to develop team working, discipline and communication skills.
With support from ambassadors Howard Webb and Paul Jones, the project continues to grow. Every day of the week across South Yorkshire, there is a SportFX session at a school.
The project was first set up in Goldthorpe, Barnsley in 2010 by the then Safer Neighbourhood Team, to help reduce antisocial behaviour in the area. The sessions were so successful, contributing to a 50% reduction in antisocial behaviour in the first year, that in 2013, SportFX launched to expand sessions across the county.
The sessions run in partnership with local schools with access to high-quality astro-turf facilities and are delivered by qualified FA coaches with the support of volunteers, local Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) and Police Officers.
Many volunteers go on to be trained up to level one coaching, providing them with the opportunity to work for the FA in paid employment delivering future sessions as the project expands.
