Migrant Roma are one of the newest communities in South Yorkshire. Important work is already being done in some local areas to explore what this means. Migration Yorkshire is leading a short project to bring policy makers, Roma, non-Roma people and organisations together to share information and discuss what’s working and what isn’t.
We’re also exploring what still needs to be done to reduce the exclusion of Roma populations and to foster positive integration across South Yorkshire communities. The project started in April 2016 and is funded by the National Lottery through the Big Lottery Fund.
What’s new and what’s next on the project – August 2016
We’ve been really lucky to find 3 Roma ‘community champions’ living in South Yorkshire to advise and work with us on this project. We’re discovering more about the situation of Roma in South Yorkshire, through hearing from some Roma and some service providers in the region.
We held a launch event for all in May and we’re in the middle of doing a survey to find out what services local organisations are providing. The Roma community champions have been running focus groups in each part of South Yorkshire with local Roma, and we’ve been bringing together Roma and local organisations in smaller meetings for each of Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield.
One of the most striking things we’ve heard was when launch event participants told us about their hopes for Roma in their neighbourhoods. The most common hope is that Roma will feel a valuable part of the community and develop stronger community relationships. Other issues highlighted by participants include: safety, opportunities, access to services and hopes for children and young people.
We plan to share our learning in more detail this autumn, but you can read a short report on our findings so far by clicking this link: Roma integration in South Yorkshire: an update from Migration Yorkshire, July 2016
